Three years ago I decided to depart from my usual genre, YA, and try a Middle Grade book, of the sort that I would have loved when I was a little girl. One about a girl who must go to a strange place to live, among people she has never met, doing things she has never done before. Nina Driscoll has to go live in Texas after the death of her mother. She has never met her grandparents or aunts or cousins. How will she cope with this new place?
There’s Grandpa, first off…a sweetheart of an old man….
And her Aunt Millie, stern and hard working…but not bad at that….
And then there’s Grandma.
Grandma is a force to reckon with. Terminally cranky, impossible to please… allergic to flowers, and seemingly to little girls!

Nancy and Sarah Jane. Two very different girls. But equally congenial.
Danny and Hank… boys who will be boys...and they just do not like girls!
